A Curly Girl Guide to Surviving Summer.

Step 1: HYDRATE.

No seriously inside and out. Drink plenty of water and make sure your hair is always hydrated. A good way to ensure hair length retention is through hydration. When your hair is hydrated it stays vibrant and healthy.

To keep your hair hydrated drink water, sleep with satin bonnet or silk pillows and try to avoid heat since its already sunny outside.

Step 2: LOW-MAINTANCE STYLING.

Summer is not the time to play with your hair. It is important to try and keep your hands out of your hair. Its way to hot for your hair to be covered in oils and gels and all that styling cream from every day styling.

Try incorporating twists, bantu nots, pineapple or cornrows. These long lasting low- manipulation styles will keep your hair protected and you will look cute too.

Step 3: WASH MORE.

It’s HOT! That means, more sweat, more build up and more clogged follicles. Co-washing is not going to cut it. Wash your hair with either shampoo or apple-cider vinegar. Your sculp has to breathe or else it will cause your hair to frizz and dry while your sculp will become oily and dirty.

This is not a season for lazy natural life, don’t skip wash days and don’t neglect your hair regime

Step 4: LET IT BREATHE.

AKA; No protective styling. I know this might sound blasphemous but hear me out. You do not want to cover your hair in the heat. For one, its going to be hot under there. Weather it is wigs, faux locs or braids, you should opt to protective style in winter. The Air in summer is nice and moist and can add keep your hair hydrated and moisturised. It’s the friendliest time of the year for you to show of your Fro. Plus, the sun on your hair is good for blood circulation which increases hair growth.

Step 5: BE ACTIVE.

You heard me. It is summer, go outside and do fun things! The more active the better. Increased activity plus heat equals increased blood circulation and stimulation which can increase hair growth. It also benefits your hair health through hormone production increase. Combine that with the consumption of vitamins like vitamin C, B vitamins and omega-3, you are looking at growing, shiny healthy curls.

BONUS STEP

If you decide to live life to the fullest this summer and do any water activities that include salt water or chlorine, please protect your hair with a lot of conditioners before entering said water. Follow up with a complete wash day as soon as you no longer going to the beach or pools every day. Wash your hair more often during those times especially if you are swimming multiple days and for a few weeks.

I hope with these steps you and your hair will have an enjoyable and growth filled summer.

Jacinta Caleb.
